I don’t know about you, but keeping up with what is happening in golf is real different for me than it was a couple of years ago. Gone are the days of reading the local newspaper sports section, Golf Digest, Golf Magazine, GolfWeek and feel like I was current. Aside from the lack of local golf information, the problem for me isn’t that there is too little information now but that there is too much.
I think we can help each other out in this new world of golf information. I will give you some of my good sources if you will give me some of yours. What I am giving you is what I think is good stuff and I am hoping to get some good sources from you than we can all share with one another.
Here is my list of sources of golf information:
Michigan News
GAM.org – this is the local arm of the USGA that conducts amateur tournaments plus keeps official handicaps. Since they conduct the Michigan amateur tournaments, they have all the results. If you are member of the GAM you also get an email newsletter. Another perk of being a member is a subscription to the hardcopy Golf Digest.
Lesson on Golf / LessononGolf.com– this is a weekly golf radio show hosted by Jeff Lesson of CBS sports radio. It is on 97.1 FM on weekend mornings from March through August. Jeff fills you in on local golf courses and interviews golf course operators, golf pros, and other Michigan golf personalities. He also interviews Miles of Golf for club fitting tips. The website sells discounted rounds of golf at some really good courses.
MichiganGolfer.com / Michigan Golfer News – these are a good source for state golf news. Michigan Golfer is a digital magazine with some of the best writers in the state like Jack Berry and Terry Moore. The Michigan Golfer News is a weekly email newsletter that is quirky but fun and informative. These both are the work of Art McCafferty, a local guy.
Equipment News
Golfwrx.com – this is a huge site for mostly golf equipment. They get all kinds of threads going on equipment plus club reviews. A Dearborn guy, Richard Audi, is one of the owners of the site. He is a student of Paul Haase of the Kendall Academy so we frequently see him at Miles of Golf. We pester each other with questions about equipment.
Golf Club Companies – what you get here is mostly technical information on their clubs. Titleist does have an interesting off shoot for their Titleist Performance Institute. The TPI is a great resource for golf physical conditioning. Titleist also has a good newsletter call Team Titleist that covers new equipment and what is happening on tour with their equipment.
MyGolfSpy.com – this is another big equipment site similar to Golfwrx.
National News
Golf Digest / GolfDigest.com / GolfWorld Monday – these are all part of Conde Nast publications and consist of the print magazine, the website, and a weekly email newsletter. They are the biggest source of national and world golf news plus instruction tips and equipment reviews.
Golf Magazine / Golf.com – similar to Golf Digest.
GolfWeek – similar to Golf Digest but with more tournament statistics and fewer tips.
Golf Channel / GolfChannel.com – Everyone is familiar with the Golf Channel but the website is a nice compliment to the TV.
Local News
AnnArbor.com – In the Ann Arbor area, this is the one area that I think has gone significantly downhill in the last few years. AnnArbor.com is a big disappointment. About the only thing they cover is the Miles of Golf / Ann Arbor City Championships and high school scores which is nice, but it misses a lot of good local stories. My take is that they think the only sport in the universe is Michigan Football. Please, if there is something out there with local golf news, let me in on it.
Miles of Golf Times / Milesofgolf.com – This is our website and email newsletter. We try to give you some local news, but we are just not a news organization. Knowing that there is very little out there, we will try to do better. You can help us out by emailing us local information that we will get in our newsletter or on our website. times@milesofgolf.com
